Greta McCarthy, O’Brien has spent 20 years specialising in the production of potted herbs in Annascaul on the Dingle Peninsula. Growing up in East Cork with inspiration from her tomato growing father and holidays spent working in Ballymaloe House, she pursued a career in horticulture and gained a scholarship to the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin in 1981. She later opened garden centres in Bray and Greystones. In 1997 she moved to Kerry and began her herb nursery. She now supplies many restaurants and outlets on the peninsula, gives talks/workshops and writes about herbs.

Her recent publication ‘Greta’s Herbs, Growing Wild in the West of Ireland’, was launched on Saturday 8th April at the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin. The event was held in the magnificent Teak House which was restored in 2009.
This neatly sized book is in full colour throughout, thread sewn with a laminated cover making it durable and very user friendly. Beautifully designed by Dublin-based Mary Guinan, it contains over 100 captivating images by poetic wilderness photographer Rob Beighton. (RRP €15)
Greta says “Herbs are in high demand and yet very many people lack the basic knowledge on how to grow and use these wonderful plants. I have endeavoured to make this an easy read so it is not a complicated text book. I hope my story as a gardener weaves through the pages as I write from experience - not from theory. Its primary purpose is to encourage and assist the gardener or herb lover by supplying practical advice.
