Best Chowder Competition


10am to 12pm at North Kerry College. The winner enters the National Competition.


  • Chowder comp starts at 10am sharp
  • 90 minutes to produce a minimum of 3 bowls of chowder for judging
  • Only a stock can be premade all other work must be done in the time allowed
  • Contestants must supply their own equipment , pans, spoons and bowls,etc
  • Gas rings tables etc will be in place
  • Contestants must leave their work station clean and tidy
  • Judges decision is final on the day
  • The chowder must comply to being a seafood chowder

ORNUA/LISTOWEL FOOD FAIR CHEESE COMPETITION 2016

Applications are invited for the Ornua/Listowel Food Fair Cheese Competition 2016, which will take place as part of Listowel Food Fair, November 10th to 13th 2016. 

The aim of this competition is to provide positive recognition to cheese producers for their achievements in flavour, aroma, texture, and appearance of their product.

ENTRY CRITERIA

  1. Cheeses must be made in Ireland, milk source only. As part of the entry process, you will be asked to confirm that all of your entries meet this essential requirement.
  2. Send your cheese in its original form. Cheeses may not be plugged and/or resealed. Cheeses must be entered as whole wheels, loaves, or blocks. Exceptions will be made for larger form cheeses. These cheeses must be presented in the form in which they are available for wholesale distribution.
  3. Any product may only be entered in the competition once. This includes products that may be marketed under different labels.
  4. Entries must be comprised of at least 51% cheese or cultured dairy product.
  5. Entrants must provide the name of the original cheesemaker for each entry.
  6. Entrants will be required to provide the production date for each product entered.

The Categories for entry are:

  1. MARINATED CHEESES & SMOKED CHEESES: Entries must identify the type of marinade (Olive oil, safflower oil, vinegar, wine, spirits and liqueur, etc., including additional ingredients). Information about the smoke source (i.e. natural and/or smoke flavourings) must accompany each cheese entry
  2. SHEEP'S MILK & GOAT’S MILK CHEESES: Open to all shapes and styles of 100% sheep’s or goat’s milk cheeses
  3. BLUE MOULD CHEESES & FRESH UNRIPENED CHEESES: All cheeses ripened with Penicillium roqueforti or glaucum Blue Mould Cheeses with Flavour Added. Cheese Curds, Cottage Cheese, Cream Cheese, Fromage Blanc, Fromage Frais, Impastata, Mascarpone, Quark, Ricotta
  4. CHEDDARS: All Cheddars, all milks
  5. FARMSTEAD CHEESES: Limited to cheeses and fermented milk products produced with: • Milk from herds on the farm where the cheese is produced • Care and attention given to the purity, quality, and flavour of the milk • Production primarily accomplished by hand • Natural ripening with emphasis on development of characteristic flavour and texture, without the use of shortcuts and techniques to increase yield and shelf life at the expense of quality • Respect for the traditions and history of cheese making regardless of the size of the production.

Judging Criteria:

Cheeses will be assessed based on 4 criteria:

  1. Taste (30%)
  2. Texture (30%)
  3. Appearance (30%)
  4. Packaging (10%)

Entry Date & Fee:

Entry form and €25 fee (per producer) must be returned to Mary Coleman, 2 Moylist, Bunaghara, Listowel, Co. Kerry by Friday September 30th.  

Judging will take place on Wednesday October 5th at Listowel Arms Hotel.  All entries must be delivered to the hotel by 9am on that morning.  Important: When delivering products to the hotel, please ensure that they are clearly marked “Cheese Competition Listowel Food Fair”.

Our judging panel for 2016 will be:

  • Angela Sheehan, Programme Manager, Food Industry Training Unit, UCC
  • Richard Sheehan, Chef and Nutritional Therapist
  • Paul O’Connor, Manager, Garveys Supervalu Listowel
  • Member of ORNUA (Previously Irish Dairy Board) TBC

Winners will be notified by Thursday October 6th.  Feedback to all entrants can be provided by email on request.  If you would like to receive the judges’ feedback, please provide your email address with your application. 

Prizes

The overall competition winner will receive a prize fund of €1000 plus have their winning product stocked  by Garveys Supervalu Listowel for a period of 12 months.

The 5 category winners are awarded €200 each. 

Winners’ cheeses are incorporated into the 7 course taster menu at our Artisan Food Producers’ Celebratory Dinner, held on Friday November 11th, where prizes will be awarded.

ALL-IRELAND FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION 2015

Listowel Food Fair is hosting the inaugural All-Ireland Food Photography Competition as part of its annual Food Fair, which this year is celebrating 21years and the longest running food festival in Ireland.

Listowel is the people’s food festival with its mainethos centred on encouraging and promoting emerging artisan producers.  As a result this year’s theme for the All-Ireland Food Photography Competition will be:

IRISH ARTISAN FOODS

Entrants are requested to focus their subject matter on the depiction of Irish Artisan Foods.

Specification

Entrants to the competition are asked to submit one JPEG image of 2000 pixels on the longest side in sRGB. 

A higher spec of a standardised JPEG image of A3 size in CYMK color space at 300 dpi will be required from those that are shortlisted for printing and exhibiting.

Competition Rules

  • The judges’ decision in interpreting whether or not an entry relates to or portrays Irish Artisan Foods is final
  • All submissions must be the entrants own work
  • All entrants must be 18 years or over
  • No identifying marks on images submitted
  • Competition entries must not be uploaded to social media sites prior to the announcement of competition results
  • An entry will be deemed void if the judges determine that it is not an original, or if the entries are illegible, incomplete, damaged, irregular, altered, counterfeit, produced in error or obtained through fraud or theft

 

Judging Panel

The Judging Panel is designed to reflect the broad nature and ideals of food photography and will be made up of:

  • Mr.  Michael O’Sullivan, FRPS, FIPF 
  • Ms. Rosie Dempsey, Lecturer in Creative Media Dept, ITT
  • Mr Pierce Walsh, Restauranteur and Listowel Food Fair Representative
  • Mr. Pat Tobin, MA in Creative Media, Photographer who specialises in fashion and public relations imagery.


Results of the Competition

  • The Top 20 images chosen by the judging panel will be displayed in A3 sized prints at an Open Exhibition in the run up to and during the Listowel Food Fair 2015
  • The Winner will be invited to attend and will be officially announced at the Best Emerging Awards night in Listowel Arms Hotel, Friday June 19th 2015.

 

Competition Prizes

  • Winner will receive a prize fund of €200
  • Runner up will receive a prize fund of €100

GET YOUR RECIPE COOKED IN A LISTOWEL RESTAURANT!


For lovers of cooking who wish to go beyond making your “special dish” for family and friends, this is the event for you!

This year, for the first time, we are running a competition for all amateur home chefs who have a treasured signature recipe that they would like to showcase to the world. This is your chance to get your recipe cooked by professionals in one of Listowel’s restaurants.

From entries received, eight recipes are shortlisted by our judging panel to appear as a ‘Special’ dish on the menu of one of the 4 participating restaurants on Saturday June 20th during the Listowel Food Fair (2 recipes per restaurant).

Our judges include Culinary Lecturer of Tralee Institute Dan Browne, Nutritional Therapist Sid Sheehan and renowned local chefs.  

The ‘Special’ dish that gets most orders from the 2 featured on the night in each participating restaurant will win and the recipe owner will get a prize to the total value of €200.  The recipe owner will need to be in attendance at the restaurant on the night that their dish is being served.

Shortlisted recipes and the restaurant in which they will be featured will be listed on our website.
